Magic Mirror Part 2: The Tutorial

A couple of months ago, I wrote about a Raspberry Pi-based Magic Mirror project that helped me keep track of my family's calendars and to-do lists. Well, I've written a tutorial on how to create your own!

Presenting...

How to Make a Magic Mirror with Raspberry Pi

June 17, 2020

Need a great project for your Raspberry Pi 4 kit? Use it to create a command center to display the weather, clock, your calendar, or even a news feed!

The tutorial walks you through phase one - getting set up with your local weather, Google calendars, and the like. Since the Magic Mirror2 project is open source, there's a whole slew of third party modules you can add in and customize to make your mirror exactly what you want it to be. If you end up writing your own modules, the Magic Mirror2 Forums are full of super helpful folks to get you on your way.

For my own Magic Mirror, I added some basic CSS formatting for the calendars, as well as a safe boot/shutdown button per Bobby's tutorial here:

Safely reboot or shutdown your Raspberry Pi to avoid corrupting the microSD card using the built-in general purpose button on the Qwiic pHAT v2.0!

I also set up the Pi to start the Magic Mirror program on startup with the following tutorial:

How to Run a Raspberry Pi Program on Startup

September 18, 2018

In this tutorial, we look at various methods for running a script or program automatically whenever your Raspberry Pi (or other Linux computer) boots up.

Life has been SO much more organized with this project hanging up...or at least I'm not running around like my hair is on fire QUITE as much as I used to be. Win!

Have you built your own command station? What projects have you done with your Pi? Let us know in the comments!
