Megadrive Synth MIDI Control!

Making music on classic hardware is a dream for most chiptune fans, so it’s lucky that last year Kasser released their DAFM, a lovingly created replication of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive sound chip! It’s now time for the DAFM Synth Upgrade Kit which brings new firmware and features to the DAFM – most notably control over parameters via incoming CC messages from your keyboard or control surface!

The DAFM is a glorious sounding synth, controlled by a touch sensitive PCB, external MIDI keyboard or via USB. It houses the mighty YM2612 or YM3438, both of which give you 16-Bit era sounds, from punchy bass stabs to emotive arps and atmospheres! This upgrade kit takes the place of the onboard controller shipped with all kits and completed units shipped before January 2020 and allows for some spectacular new features.

It offers control of synth parameters via CC (control change) messages, meaning they can be automated in your daw or played expressively from your MIDI keyboard. The quick start guide will tell you all you need to know! The latest firmware also includes sounds from Sonic The Hedgehog, Streets Of Rage, Ecco The Dolphin and ToeJam & Earl.

The DAFM Upgrade kit is sold by Kasser who are based in Spain. See the video below for the synth in action.
