An SMD Challenger Approaches, Round One…Solder!

One of the most popular activities at the Hackaday Supercon has the SMD Challenge, and even though Supercon can’t happen in person this year, you can’t stop the soldering!

The Hackaday Remoticon, the virtual hardware conference taking the place of Supercon this year, is full of workshops, demos, 2 keynote talks, and yes, you guessed it, an SMD Challenge. Main Track tickets to socialize and spectate are free. But and you can get a ticket to join the challenge from your own workbench for $5 — soldering those tiny surface mount parts live via webcam. After signing up, participants will receive a discount code for a free SMD Challenge Kit through Tindie, just pay shipping.

Al Williams will be hosting this soldering skill showdown! Well, it’s more of a friendly competition than a showdown, but you get the idea. Participants will be able to join one of the heats held throughout Saturday and Sunday. Whether you’re an early bird or night owl, there’s a timeslot with your name on it.

The awesome SMD Challenge Hackaday Edition kits were created by Markersbox! It’s important to mention that you’ll also need tools and a CR2032 battery to compete successfully. You could try powering the kit with your sheer love of all things soldering, but we recommend the battery.

Don’t forget to check out the Official Rules before you jump into the challenge. The kits start with a 1206 package and work down to “oblivion of frustration”. So who’s ready to put their skills to the test?

We hope you’ll join the challenge and come hang out to watch as brave competitors solder on!
